Announcements from Shining Lakes News, Summer Solstice 1998

In the News - Welcome new Grove Ecologist: Toad!

Shining Lakes Grove has a new Grove Ecologist. Believe it or not...his name is Toad! Toad, with his oh-so-appropriate name, worked with our past Ecologist, Marae Price, and is now up to speed to take on this important office.

Toad is a member of the National Plant Society. His college education includes Botany and Zoology and using native species for landscaping. According to Toad: "I have a natural affinity for plants and their energies".

Toad is planning to form a chapter of the ADF Naturalists Guild at Shining Lakes this fall. He would like to see the Grove do more work with Botsford Preserve and with the land in general. He is working on plans to make the Sluggies more involved in "Eco-Matters".

We look for great things from Toad. He has great enthusiasm. Besides, with a name like that, he must be good.

Lugh Fest '98

The 1998 SLG Lughnasadh festival is right around the corner. This year we have outdone ourselves, if I do say so myself. The festival for '98 features over 15 workshops by teachers from as far as Rhode Island and Montreal. We have "Basic Magical Principals" by Ian Corrigan, the five part series of Seers Guild workshops for the ADF study plan presented by the entire ADF Seers Council, "Women of the Celts" by Liafal, "Physical and Psychic Self-Defense" by Kestrel and Phil, and "Drumming" by Earth Rhythm, just to name a few! We will also feature a Druidic wedding Friday morning, a Norse Symbel and Saturday evening entertainment sponsored by the Bardic Guild. There will be the always exciting Games again - will our two-time champ keep his title? We will also be hosting many vendors of all kinds. This year we are catering the Feast which will feature a whole roast pig! The festivities beginning with registration opening Friday, August 7 at 9AM at Emrich Center in Brighton, MI. Registration forms (If you missed the one in SLN last time) can be obtained from Rob Henderson or Lisa Kamp or by contacting the Grove. Scholarships are available. Child care will be co-op only this year. Don't miss this!

Shining Lakes Grove would like to thank Brighn for his dedicated service as SLG Chronicler and Marae Price for her wonderful efforts as Grove Ecologist. Their creativity and leadership in our community was highly valued by all of us. Marae has moved to Stone Creed Grove, ADF and Brighn to Willow Marsh Proto-Grove, ADF. We wish them all of the the best and hope to see them continue to attend our events when they can. Brighn may be moving to the Marsh, and Marae to Stone Creed, but they will always be SLuGs!

The Financial pages....

Be sure to check out regalia for all the new items for sale! All proceeds go to the Grove! This summer regalia is featuring merchandise from "Humanitees". This group not only splits the proceeds with SLG, it donates a big part of it's own to environmental charities.

THE FESTIVAL/FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS! IF YOU CAN HELP OUT WITH THIS IMPORTANT GROUP, PLEASE CONTACT ROB.

The SLG fundraising committee is working hard this spring. In addition to planning the biggest festival we have ever had, there will be a Grove garage sale at Elizabeth and Victor's house. Please see Rob for details if you can help with the sale or have items to donate.

Additionally, don't forget to come and play with us at Game Night and participate in the High Day raffles and other projects over the coming months.

The goal of the fundraising committee is not only to make sure we can afford our events, but to build a nest egg so we can eventually buy land of our own and build on it. To achieve this, we need everyone's help and support! If fundraising is not your "bag", please make a point of supporting the ongoing efforts of this group. It will take the hard work of all of the SLuGs if we are to attain these goals!

Many thanks to all the folks who put their time and energy into this committee. Fundraising events are great fun for everyone!
