The Lughnasadh 2000 Fools' Competition

Fools have played an important role in courts as far back in history as ancient Greek and Rome. In medieval courts Fools were not mentally deficient. Rather they were known for their wit. In ancient times, men and women of keen insight and caustic wit used their ability to create satire to obtain powerful patronage by assuming the role of Fool. Modern Fools can be found on radio, television or in newspapers, using political satire and humor to help us see government leaders as real men and women with human failings.
Each year at Lughnasadh, a Fool is selected from a group of worthy competitors. But the role of the Fool does not end with the competition. The position of Fool is an important one within the Grove. Like the Fools of old, the Grove Fool should be prepared to use a ready wit to lighten heavy energy, to use humor and satire to provide balance, to keep us from taking ourselves too seriously or thinking of ourselves as too important. The Grove Fool is sorely missed when they are not present at rituals. If you are not able or willing to perform the duties of the Fool and to be present at rituals, please do not compete for the role.
